Photo contest entries

by heather on May 17, 2012

photo contest t-shirtsWell, it’s May. That means it’s time to start thinking about what digital photos I want to enter into the Iowa State Fair this year. Honestly, I’m not sure how much longer I’m going to continue entering in the photo contest, though. For one thing, it really stresses me out to agonize over which photos to choose each year (only up to four can be entered). Then it never fails. Every year when I go to use my digital printer to make the prints, the color is off from what I see on the monitor so then I end up printing several copies of each photo just to get something I’m happy with. And also, there always seems to be at least one photo that looks good on my monitor, but after it is printed shows that it is not such a high color photo after all. It can be very frustrating. Maybe I really should just stop trying to get the miniscule amount of exposure that comes from entering at the fair and instead start selling my digital photos on shirts online somewhere instead. Maybe that would work better for me. That is assuming I’ll find some ambition somewhere along the way.

Photo keepsakes

by heather on May 15, 2012

digital photo shirt printingOn Saturday evening we had what is called a Super Moon (also known as a perigee moon). I, of course, was ready for it. I love shooting the moon, particularly moonrises so I was not about to miss an opportunity for digital photos of this phenomenon. I even set up my tripod on our picnic table to get a better vantage point. Here is an explanation of the perigee moon via NASA: The moon’s exact full phase (May 6 03:36 UT) will occur less than two minutes after it reaches perigee, the closest point to Earth in the Moon’s orbit, making it the largest Full Moon of 2012. The Full Perigee Moon will appear to be some 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a Full Moon near apogee, the most distant point in the elliptical lunar orbit. After waiting for the moon to rise above some low clouds on the eastern horizon, I was treated with a lovely sight. I had a great time taking shot after shot of the moon through some high, hazy clouds. I am well pleased by the results I got and now will be making sure to make a printed banner of it to hang on my wall. And I love the blue of the sky in the picture so much that I am hoping to find a new long-sleeved t-shirt in that exact color.

Buy printed merchandise

05.10.2012 Digital Printing Shirts

Last summer I started reading and fell in love with a new blog. The writer is quirky, strange, irreverent, and hocks her own odd printed merchandise, but is oh-so-funny. Several months ago she posted that she had spent ten years writing a book about her life and that it was finally being published. Even though [...]

Digital Northern Lights shot

05.07.2012 Digital Printing Shirts

Last Monday, we got a space-related treat here in Iowa. The Northern Lights were just barely visible to us. We are far enough south here that it doesn’t really happen very often. I’ve been keeping track of when the Aurora Borealis has been active since about January of this year and there have been many, [...]

Printed banners

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being afraid…and doing it anyway. (I so need that printed on a banner.) This concept is something I know a lot about. As a kid, I was very timid and reserved. I was afraid of (it seemed like anyway) almost everything. One of my biggest fears [...]

Digital printing on shirts

My kids’ school has a kindergarten roundup every spring. For one day, all potential kindergarteners for the following school year go to school. They do kindergarten activities, get to play on the ‘big kids’ playground for recess, and do other kindergarten related things. Last year the kids who had art class made digital art that [...]

Digital printing technology

04.23.2012 Digital Printing Shirts

Over the weekend we had a couple of rounds of severe weather roll through my area. When the first round came through, I was actually thirty miles to the north of my home running errands and getting groceries. Thank goodness for digital technology. I would not even have had any idea that anything was going [...]

On the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic I had the opportunity to see one of my favorite movies of all time for the 10th time in the theater (this time with my mom and twelve year old daughter in tow). If I didn’t think it was weird for a woman my age, [...]

Photos of the gnome home

04.13.2012 Digital Printing Shirts

Last summer my husband had a creative streak and fashioned what looked like a small door with a ladder on an old maple tree in our front yard. It actually looked kind of cool so we said we had a new neighbor and called it the gnome home. I kind of liked it so it [...]

Bug shot

04.10.2012 Digital Printing Shirts

I was out taking pictures of the flowers in my yard recently and happened to notice a couple of beetles crawling up and down some blades of grass near a grouping of grape hyacinths. I changed my focus from the flowers to the bugs. Those little stinkers are fast when they want to be! They [...]
