Well, it’s May. That means it’s time to start thinking about what digital photos I want to enter into the Iowa State Fair this year. Honestly, I’m not sure how much longer I’m going to continue entering in the photo contest, though. For one thing, it really stresses me out to agonize over which photos to choose each year (only up to four can be entered). Then it never fails. Every year when I go to use my digital printer to make the prints, the color is off from what I see on the monitor so then I end up printing several copies of each photo just to get something I’m happy with. And also, there always seems to be at least one photo that looks good on my monitor, but after it is printed shows that it is not such a high color photo after all. It can be very frustrating. Maybe I really should just stop trying to get the miniscule amount of exposure that comes from entering at the fair and instead start selling my digital photos on shirts online somewhere instead. Maybe that would work better for me. That is assuming I’ll find some ambition somewhere along the way.

On Saturday evening we had what is called a Super Moon (also known as a perigee moon). I, of course, was ready for it. I love shooting the moon, particularly moonrises so I was not about to miss an opportunity for digital photos of this phenomenon. I even set up my tripod on our picnic table to get a better vantage point. Here is an explanation of the perigee moon via NASA: The moon’s exact full phase (May 6 03:36 UT) will occur less than two minutes after it reaches perigee, the closest point to Earth in the Moon’s orbit, making it the largest Full Moon of 2012. The Full Perigee Moon will appear to be some 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a Full Moon near apogee, the most distant point in the elliptical lunar orbit. After waiting for the moon to rise above some low clouds on the eastern horizon, I was treated with a lovely sight. I had a great time taking shot after shot of the moon through some high, hazy clouds. I am well pleased by the results I got and now will be making sure to make a printed banner of it to hang on my wall. And I love the blue of the sky in the picture so much that I am hoping to find a new long-sleeved t-shirt in that exact color.
